Scale-out SQL database offers right combination of cost, performance and data durability
SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – Jan 29, 2014 – January 29, 2014 – Clustrix, provider of the leading scale-out SQL database engineered for the cloud, today outlined the optimal approach for real-time analytics on live operational data through a combination of in-memory methods together with Flash storage. ClustrixDB allows enterprises to perform complex analytics within seconds using this technique, resulting in much higher performance at lower cost.
According to GigaOM Research, real-time analytics are important because capturing transactions and analyzing them in the same data-management performance tier produces the fastest possible response. For most applications, less than 20 percent of the data is hot and accessed very frequently. The rest of the data is cold and accessed less frequently or rarely, if ever. In-memory databases insist on putting all data into memory which is not cost-effective for most applications. With ClustrixDB, the hot data is stored in RAM and the remainder on SSDs or spinning disks. The smart combination of memory and SSDs for real-time analytics achieves the highest performance while significantly reducing overall hardware costs. For instance, two terabytes of RAM on AWS for $28 per hour costs approximately $245,000 a year, whereas that same storage capacity using SSDs costs just $1.6 per hour or approximately $14,000 annually.
iOffer, a rich e-commerce platform recently switched the core of its website from MySQL to ClustrixDB in order to create real-time reports on live data at the same time it performed transactions.
“Sophisticated, real-time operational analytics is a key feature of our website’s user experience,” said Robert Zotter, lead engineer at iOffer. “With the help of ClustrixDB, we are now able to support buyers and vendors with high performance analytics and at the same time track and measure what’s performing and not performing well in the marketplace.”
“In order to be competitive, enterprises must be able to analyze data in real-time from multiple sources including online transactions, and the huge amounts of unstructured data flowing in from the web, social media, mobile, forums and other sources,” said Robin Purohit, CEO of Clustrix. “In-memory databases are cost-prohibitive, requiring expensive RAM that can only support transactions, not real-time analytics. ClustrixDB offers our customers the best of both worlds, providing real-time analysis of transactional data with a combination of Flash and RAM designed to scale at low costs.”
Clustrix has concluded that SSD-backed memory is the right way to do in-memory analytics for three primary reasons:
- Hot data lives in memory, cold data a few microseconds away in SSDs
- SSDs provide the durability to be system-of-record
- Scale-out allows running real-time analytics on system-of-record database
In addition to striking the right balance of memory and SSD, ClustrixDB software uses a combination of multi-version concurrency control (MVCC) and massively parallel processing (MPP) for faster analytics.
This optimal real-time analytics approach will be demonstrated at the 2014 Strata Conference in Santa Clara, CA at Clustrix booth #1122. The company will also give a presentation 4PM in Feb 13th — “Real-Time Analytics with NewSQL: Why Hadoop is not enough.”
