Clustrix NewSQL Development Kit Available as a Free Trial
San Francisco, Calif. – February 7, 2012 – Clustrix announced today that Massive Media used the Clustrix distributed relational database system to build and grow Twoo, a social networking site, to more than four million users in only six months without sharding the application and without any downtime. Clustrix also announced the availability of the Clustrix Development Kit as a free download of a software-only environment that simulates the hardware components of the Clustrix database appliance, allowing users to try the industry’s first distributed relational database system that scales to an unlimited number of users, transactions or data.
Clustrix reinvented the relational database from the ground up to support growing big-data applications that “break” MySQL and need to scale easily, with no limits and without giving up database availability and performance. With Clustrix, today’s web environments avoid the effort and expense of database sharding and benefit from a MySQL-compatible system that installs and expands in minutes, providing high scale-out transactional performance.
“Pre-Clustrix, we spent a lot of time on optimizing for performance and scale. Now we can spend those resources better,” said Lorenz Bogaert, co-founder and CEO of Massive Media. “It does not make sense to build a new site using the old system of sharding MySQL.”
"We are seeing increased interest in NewSQL database technologies that enable users to scale their databases without having to resort to complex manual sharding," said Matt Aslett, research manager, data management and analytics at 451 Research. "Clustrix's combination of an SSD-based appliance and MySQL compatibility is a compelling alternative for enterprises struggling to manage with sharding MySQL."
“Massive Media is a great example of the radical simplicity and scalability of our NewSQL database solution that entirely eliminates the need for sharding,” said Robin Purohit, president and CEO of Clustrix. “Now that our customers have proven how easy it is to scale their databases with Clustrix, we are ready to scale our business and will be highlighting the growing list of customer successes in the months ahead.”
Clustrix continues to expand both its customer base and executive team; the company recently announced the appointment of Robin Purohit as president and CEO and Mark Sarbiewski as chief marketing officer, both former HP executives.
Developers and database professionals who need a better and more cost-effective way to scale their databases can explore functionality, develop apps and ensure compatibility of the Clustrix solution with their existing big-data environments by downloading the Development Kit at http://info.clustrix.com/devkit.

San Francisco, Calif. – January 18, 2012 – Clustrix announced today that Mark Sarbiewski has joined the company as chief marketing officer. Sarbiewski joined Clustrix from HP, where he was vice president of product marketing for HP Software. As part of its 2012 expansion plans, Clustrix also announced its move, as of this month, to the new, more spacious headquarters at 201 Mission St., Suite 800, in San Francisco.
Sarbiewski’s appointment follows the recent appointment of Robin Purohit, a former top executive at HP and Symantec, as president and CEO. “I am pleased to announce Mark’s addition to our team,” said Robin Purohit. “He brings both large-company and startup experience to Clustrix, and his expertise with both inbound and outbound marketing, as well as category development will be very important for us in this growth phase.”
Sarbiewski joined HP through the acquisition of Mercury in 2006. Clustrix Named Red Herring Global 100 Award Winner
San Francisco, Calif. – December 13, 2011 – Clustrix announced today that it has been selected as a winner of the Red Herring Global 100 award, honoring leading private companies from North America, Europe, and Asia. Red Herring’s editorial staff evaluated the companies on both quantitative and qualitative criteria, such as financial performance, technology innovation, management quality, strategy, and market penetration. This assessment of potential was complemented by a review of the track record and standing of startups relative to their sector peers.
“Choosing the best out of the previous two years was by no means a small feat,” said Alex Vieux, chairman of Red Herring. “After rigorous contemplation and discussion, we narrowed down our list from 1,100 potential companies to 100 winners. It was an extremely difficult process. Clustrix should be extremely proud of its achievement; the competition for the Top 100 was fierce. The Top 100 Global are truly the best of the best.”
Red Herring’s Global 100 list has become a mark of distinction for identifying promising companies and entrepreneurs. Red Herring editors were among the first to recognize that companies such as Google, Skype, Baidu, Salesforce.com, YouTube, eBay and many others would change the way we live and work.

Largest Independent MySQL Services Vendor Confirms Performance and Scale Benefits of the Clustrix Parallel Distributed Database Architecture
PERCONA LIVE MYSQL CONFERENCE
San Francisco, Calif. – October 25, 2011 – Clustrix announced the results of a Percona head-to-head evaluation of Clustrix and MySQL systems, showing the high scalability and sustained performance of Clustrix database appliances compared to MySQL. The tests showed once more what Clustrix users have already been experiencing in web environments: with the Clustrix systems, they do not have to give up transactions or ACID properties, relational semantics, or any of the rich SQL features to meet the performance and scale demands of rapidly growing high-traffic Internet applications. Full tests and findings can be downloaded at http://bit.ly/tUKlkz.
Percona ran a Percona-written, TPCC benchmark against Percona's MySQL Server on an Intel- SSD based machine, MySQL on a Fusion-io-based machine, and different sizes of Clustrix database appliances based on a parallel distributed database architecture. On top of the high performance and scalability delivered by the Clustrix system, it also provides built-in fault tolerance and no single point of failure. The MySQL systems tested either have a single Fusion-io card or SSD drives in a RAID 0 configuration. If any component - such as drive, motherboard, or memory - fails, the entire database will fail.
The first conclusion that Percona noted was that the Clustrix database really was indeed scalable. As a website gets more and more users, concurrency goes up and aggregate performance throughput requirements increase while users expect the same or better response time.
According to Percona, the experts in MySQL performance, “For highly concurrent workloads, Clustrix provides great performance, and if you need better throughput, it scales just by adding more nodes."
“The most interesting conclusion in my opinion is the fact that transactional, relational, full-featured SQL can scale and Clustrix has proved it in this testing and at multiple production customer deployments around the world,” said Aaron Passey, Clustrix CTO, who recently wrote a blog post describing the tests and results. “The test showed a complicated workload with multi-statement transactions, aggregates, foreign key constraints, and a large percentage of writes, which are what the NoSQL movement has proclaimed as too difficult to scale. Clustrix has solved this problem; once more, we deliver the unlimited scale promised by NoSQL without giving up the features of SQL, at unmatched performance.”

Photobox focuses on growth opportunities following Clustrix adoption
San Francisco, Calif. – August 19, 2011 – Matt Aslett, Senior Analyst of The 451 Group, spoke with one of Clustrix’s customers, Photobox, to discuss their deployment of the NewSQL Database.
Having grown its use of MySQL to manage with the increased adoption of its photo-printing services, Photobox realized that it was about to hit a wall and turned to Clustrix.
Photobox first showed interest in Clustrix because of its ability to offer, “both scalability and durability as well as be compatible with MySQL applications.” In mid-December of 2009 the Clustrix database appliance was installed, giving Photobox additional capacity for the peak demand season. As a result, they found that Clustrix had "proved its claim that the appliance could be deployed to run existing MySQL applications unchanged, and in conjunction with an existing MySQL deployment to ease migration."
Photobox created a 10-point checklist that Clustrix would have to pass in order to fully migrate to the new database. They passed all of the tests with flying colors. Photobox fully deployed Clustrix in the Spring of 2010, “beginning the process of migrating its MySQL deployments to Clustrix by taking advantage of its ability to replicate to and from MySQL by adopting it first as a slave to the MySQL master, and then eventually promoting Clustrix instances to perform as both master and slave.” By adding Clustrix to their existing system, Photobox "is now in a position to continue its growth without having to worry each year about its ability to meet."

Clustrix takes aim at the enterprise with new SQL database appliance
San Francisco, Calif. – July 20, 2011 – Clustrix, the leading NewSQL Database, connected with Matt Aslett, Senior Analyst of The 451 Group, to discuss its changing focus from web application providers, to enterprise deployments.
In the article, Aslett takes time to discuss Clustrix’s role in the NewSQL movement. “There has been a rash of new relational database products launched in recent months that are designed to meet the scalability requirements of distributed architectures or improve performance such that horizontal scalability is no longer a necessity. We have even given these databases a name – NewSQL – to distinguish them from the NoSQL group of new non-relational database wares.”
He then touches on one of the key advantages to using Clustrix, “Clustrix is designed to avoid manual sharding, so we would expect it to be considered against transparent sharding providers …”
Lastly, Aslett continues to say, “The issue of database performance and scalability is an ongoing concern. While the NoSQL databases have attracted a lot of attention, they are not suitable for workloads that require a structured, relational database and we expect interest in NewSQL technologies to grow in 2011 and beyond,” he also says, “We expect Clustrix to garner the attention of any enterprises struggling to manage with sharding MySQL.”

How will the database incumbents respond to NoSQL and NewSQL?
San Francisco, Calif. – April 4, 2011 – Clustrix, the leading NewSQL Database, was included in a report by Matt Aslett, Senior Analyst of The 451 Group, covering how the current databases will respond to NoSQL and NewSQL.
In the report, Aslett tells that the database sector is suddenly covered with NoSQL and NewSQL companies, such as Clustrix, pushing products designed to offer advanced performance and scalability. "Clustrix's Sierra database technology supports the MySQL protocol, which it uses to ensure compatibility with existing MySQL applications, but it is primarily designed to replace MySQL rather than complement it."
